There is a Cemetery Club in Kenya. Membership is reserved for widows. To join, it is advisable if you personally plotted the death of your husband who must be rich. The Cemetery Club is for ‘eating’ life with a big spoon. At least, you know where your husband is-the grave-meaning he will never cheat on you. You will never have to answer questions why you bought the latest Harrier before selling the Lexus you acquired last year. No questions on what time you reported home. Or why you are sleeping with young boys in those hotels along the Thika superhighway.  Pastor JJ Gitahi exposed the Cemetery Club during a live broadcast at Inooro FM sometime back.

Gitahi, a pastor at Priesthood Fellowship Church in Nairobi, narrated how a member of the Cemetery Club was gnawed with the guilt after hiring hit-men to kill her rich husband, he owned residential flats. Once dead, she would enjoy all the rental income. And she did but the images of her husband asking for water as he lay dying haunted her to a point of being suicidal.

The woman later went to Pastor JJ for counseling. She confessed, she was lured by widows in the Cemetery Club all of whom had planned their wealthy husband’s deaths. At the burial, all they had to do was to appear bereaved and without strength. Crocodile tears were a must, before eating life with a big spoon: new cars, shopping sprees abroad, trips to the coast, drinking and making merry in city hotels and other houses of fun.

The women had to be nowhere near the murder scenes. Some, hired killers who shot their husbands in stage managed car robberies. In the case of the suicidal woman, who sought counseling, she chose murder through lure. The killers she hired had some business with him and he had no qualms when they called him from his house at night. It was outside his home that he was bludgeoned with a railway size hammers to the head.

Fellow members seemed to have gelled well with new planned widowhood and financial freedom

The killers disappeared into the night. The husband called for the wife in a moan, bleeding. He asked for water, as he lay dying.

That was how she joined the Cemetery Club where fellow members seemed to have gelled well with new planned widowhood and financial freedom, but the guilty of having planned the murder of a man who had loved and provided her with everything was too much to bear as the image and sound of her husband asking for water replayed in her head like a song stuck in a haunting groove.

Pastor JJGitahi exposed the Cemetery Club in a radio programme.

That she never finished her counseling, Pastor JJ concluded, could have meant maybe she carried out her suicidal thoughts. Or maybe not.

Were it not for her confession to a pastor, it would have been hard to know it exits, but a slew of cases of women arrested and arraigned in court after being busted procuring  the murder of their husbands are telling.

In September 2013, Kenyans were treated to a murder case in which Faith Wairimu Maina was to be jailed for life after pleading guilty to hiring hitmen to kill her husband, John Muthee. The shocking thing was that Muthee later withdrew the case and she was freed arguing that “I want to forgive her for the sake of our children and family.”

Muthee had made his money in the macadamia business. His wife operated a kiosk in Nairobi’s Zimmerman area.

Wairimu was arrested that June after extending her search using brokers, one who turned out to be a police informer-and who sourced for the killers-in this case undercover cops. They were to lure Muthee out of the house posing as macadamia customers.  Muthee did not appear interested that Monday.

Come Tuesday, Wairimu asked the hit men to position themselves outside the Equity bank in Zimmerman where she was with her hubby. The shooting was to appear like they shot Muthee for the money as he left the bank.

It was her second attempt at having Muthee six feet under. Wairimu had earlier paid a Sh40, 000 deposit to killers who changed their minds. She told the new killers that they had to present bloodstained clothes of her husband as proof of his death to receive the balance of Sh160, 000.

Bilha Njoki, the estranged wife of Joseph Muraya, paid hit-men Sh100, 000 to kill him

Wairimu had explained on her guilty plea that she conspired to murder her husband of 15 years over infidelity. In several cases where a couple is wealthy, cases of murderous anger are fueled when a hubby is busted using new found wealth to support another woman.

Then there was another case in 2016 when Bilha Njoki, the estranged wife of Joseph Muraya, paid hit-men Sh100, 000 to kill him. A call from the killers that the father of two children had been killed and body dumped at a dumpsite in Dandora was made to Njoki. She was awaiting the news with her sister, Lucy Mwangi, inside her black Harrier parked outside Mama Lucy Hospital in Umoja.   They had assorted wines and spirits in the car, six cellphones and the Sh400, 000 balance for the hit men after accomplishing the murder.

But first the death had to be confirmed. Bilha, who married Muraya in 2007 sent her brother Peter Gakungi and alleged new lover Jimmy Waititu at the murder scene where they found Muraya covered in blood. They made jubilant calls to Bilha but alas! Muraya had been covered in tomato sauce to make it appear like a bloody murder. The killers turned out to be undercover cops!
